ALL ABOUT PLANTS

Brassica, Brassicaceae

Cucurbits, Cucurbitaceae

Cucurbits, Cucurbitaceae

Brassica plants, also known as cruciferous vegetables, are characterized by their pungent, often peppery, flavor and distinctive four-petaled flowers resembling a cross. They are known for their nutritional value, particularly their high vitamin C and folate content, and are commonly found in various forms like cabbage, broccoli, and kale. Many Brassica species are cultivated for food and also used as cover crops, offering benefits like pest and disease management.

Brassica plants belong to the Brassicaceae family also known as the mustard family.

  • Growth Habit: They are typically herbs, sometimes small shrubs, with simple or branching stems.
  • Leaves: Leaves are arranged alternately on the stem, often with a rosette at the base. They can be simple, lobed, or deeply divided. Some varieties have clasping leaves that hug the stem.
  • Flowers: Brassica flowers have four petals arranged in a cross shape, a key feature of the family.
  • Fruits: The fruits are typically two-parted capsules containing seeds.
  • Taste and Smell: Many Brassicas have a pungent, peppery, or slightly bitter taste and smell, which is due to the presence of glucosinolates, compounds that break down into mustard oil.

Specific Examples:

  • Cabbage: Forms a dense head of succulent, waxy leaves.
  • Broccoli and Cauliflower: Cultivated for their edible flower heads.
  • Kale and Brussel Sprouts: Varieties of Brassica oleracea with different forms of leaves and buds.
  • Turnips and Radishes: Cultivated for their edible roots.
  • Mustard: A source of mustard oil and seeds.
  • Rapeseed: Cultivated for canola oil production.
